Beanie Boos, Rainbows and the Statue Of Liberty

It's been a while since I've been moved by anything enough to want to share. But in the last few months there has been so much going on related to freedom and choice.

It is usually conversations with my two daughters that motivate me to blog. This time we talked about the supreme court's decision to grant the right to same sex couples to get married. I was showing them my vibrant rainbow Facebook feed. The girls were genuinely unimpressed. They had been conducting all kinds of nondiscriminatory marriage ceremonies in our home for our Beanie Boo family of stuffed toys for a while now.
Then we talked about the Statue of Liberty and how I feel so emotional when I see it's beauty as it reminds me of all the liberties I enjoy each day. They certainly seemed aware of those who have gone before, to whom we owe gratitude for how far we have come. But they also were puzzled at how much I was making of it. It was then I realized that in their reality, they don't see separatism. They see equality and oneness, intrinsically and intuitively. And they take their freedoms for granted, but not in a entitled, special way but as part of their natural state of being.
Sarah Silverman said it well, "Don't tell girls they can be anything they want when they grow up. Because it would have never occurred to them that they couldn't."
I realized that their puzzlement and disinterest in same sex marriage and all the freedoms they enjoy was because it had never occurred to them that it could be any other way. What a blessing! I also realized how easily I can un-teach them what they just know to already be true.  My children naturally focus on what connects, includes and brings them joy. And all I need to do is stay out of their way and follow their lead. That is my moment of zen for today.
